ABOUT US

Wildlife & People Suriname

Wildlife & People Suriname (WPS) is a Surinamese organization dedicated to nature conservation. We work closely with indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLCs) who live in and depend on nature, ensuring that their conservation efforts directly benefit them. Our projects focus on protecting and monitoring (endangered) wildlife and nature reserves, strengthening communities' capacity to monitor wildlife and their habitats, and actively involving them in conservation initiatives. In this way, we contribute to the creation of alternative income sources, so that local communities benefit from the protection of both wildlife and their natural environment.

MISSION

Protecting wildlife and their habitats, with the aim of promoting a positive and sustainable society with indigenous and local communities, through awareness raising, research, conservation, and sustainable income generation.

VISION

Wild animal populations and their habitats are healthy, and protecting these species contributes to the well-being of both people and the planet.

STRATEGY

1. Directly involve local communities living near a protected area in its management.

2. Collect data through field research to protect biodiversity and identify threats early.

3. Raise awareness to combat illegal hunting and habitat destruction.
