Rehabilitation and Maintenance Voltzberg Fieldstation
The Central Suriname Nature Reserve (CSNR) with an area of 1.6 million ha was established in 1998. The CSNR covers a part of the traditional living area of the Kwinti.
The Reserve consists of an eco-tourism resort (Raleighvallen) and a field station for research and training purposes in the Voltzberg area.
The goal of this project is to restore the current field station at the foot of the Voltzberg in CSNR, and make it operational for:
- A long-term primate researcher that will study primates
- Local and international (MSc/ PhD) students using the field station for research.
- International and local NGOs using the field station for research and training purposes.
- Possibility to combine tourism with short- term research in the future to provide steady income for the center.
- Involvement and benefits for the Kwinti community through field station management, maintenance, and research assistance.
By involving the government and the Kwinti people who live there in this project, we are supporting two key groups who have the capacity to help keep the ecosystem and biodiversity in the CSNR healthy for us and future generations. We are also supporting the improvement of management capacities of the Kwinti which will be beneficial for them when enabling equal partnership in co-managing the CSNR, in the near future, when the revised Nature Protection Law is implemented.
